The answer to Jacob’s question lies in an understanding of the destiny of the house of Israel and the role of the Gentiles in God’s plan for his children. The means by which the Jews and all Israel shall again be “grafted” into the mother tree is indeed a “mystery” to the unenlightened. That mystery (cf. Romans 11:25; Romans 16:25; Ephesians 3:3)-the strange but certain process by which God fulfills his promises to Abraham and his posterity and by which those not of Abraham’s seed who accept the gospel are adopted into the household of faith-is masterfully described in the allegory of Zenos which Jacob now quotes to his hearers.
