What is meant by “first-fruits”?

Thomas R. Valletta

“The law of Moses dictated that the firstfruits of the harvest be offered unto the Lord (Deut. 26:2; Prov. 3:9; Num. 18:12–13). These, considered ‘holy unto the Lord’ (Ezek. 48:14), represent the righteous Saints of the first resurrection. These are they who were first plucked from the grave, those who are first gathered to rise from the dead. … Christ is ‘the firstfruits of them that slept’ (1 Cor. 15:20, 23; 2 Ne. 2:9), and those who arise at the first resurrection ‘are Christ’s, the first fruits’ (D&C 88:97–98)” (McConkie and Parry, Guide to Scriptural Symbols, 51).
