“Thus Saith the Lord”
What follows (through verse 33) appears to be a direct quote from the word of the Lord. A portion of that which is quoted may also be taken from a written scriptural source had by Jacob, perhaps containing an earlier revelation to Lehi on the matter. Jacob observed in the next chapter that the Lamanites “have not forgotten the commandment of the Lord, which was given unto our father [presumably Lehi]-that they should have save it were one wife, and concubines they should have none” (Jacob 3:5; italics added see also Jacob 2:34).
