“Answering the Sins of the People Upon Our Own Heads”

Joseph F. McConkie, Robert L. Millet
No work is of greater consequence than the work associated with the children of God. The Almighty himself is concerned with people; his work and glory is to bring about their immortality and eternal life (Moses 1:39). Those called to serve in his Church and kingdom must be similarly directed if their labors are to be fruitful and if these servants of the Lord are to stand blameless before God at the last day (see D&C 4:2). In the words of Joseph Smith, “None but fools will trifle with the souls of men. ” (Teachings, p. 137.) Those called to represent the Lord receive a divine investiture of authority: they are commissioned to speak, act, and labor as their Master would speak, act, and labor. They are expected to teach correct principles, to expound sound doctrines, and to reprove sin. The Saints are then under obligation to believe and obey that which they have received.
