“Having Wielded the Sword of Laban”
Jacob is at pains to note, not just that Nephi wielded the sword in defense of his people, but that he wielded “the sword of Laban. ” The sword of Laban, which was the pattern used by the nation of the Nephites in forging their on swords (see 2 Nephi 5:14), became an important symbol to that nation. The sword was emblematic of the arm of the Lord, a promise that he would strengthen and bless them, as he had their fathers. It was a reminder that there was a price to be paid, even the shedding of blood, that the word of God might be had and honored.
