“His Cross”

W. Cleon Skousen

We note that because so many Book of Mormon prophets had actually seen a vision of the Savior's crucifixion they used the word symbol of the cross exactly the same that Paul later used it to represent the core of the plan of salvation. The whole program of redemption rests squarely upon the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Without it all mankind would end up with Lucifer and his hosts.1 The emblem of the cross was therefore of tremendous significance down through the ages. As far back as 3500 B.C. Enoch was shown the Son of Man lifted up on the cross.2 Around 2200 B.C. the brother of Jared saw Jesus on the cross.3 Nephi also saw the crucifixion.4 And Jacob had seen it.5 Dr. Hugh Nibley points out that it has been recently discovered that the Book of Mormon reference to the cross in Old Testament times is not unique at all. Ancient documents show that Biblical people in ancient times commonly referred to the cross as the symbol of the atoning sacrifice of the coming Messiah.
