Jacob continues, after the pattern of Nephi, to record the actions and experiences of his people—both in the historical sense (large plates) as well as in the spiritual sense (small plates). Each of us likewise develops a history of his or her own life, including desires, plans, actions, challenges, and accomplishments. Each of us has eternal roles, Church callings, and personal responsibilities. In all things we are to progress and grow. We seek to improve and magnify our callings—this is our mission. We are responsible and accountable for our actions. Our actions are a result of our thoughts, which, when dwelt upon, become the desires that eventually result in action. Surely the scripture is true, “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he …” (Proverbs 23:7). When we think in misguided patterns, we act with misguided deeds.
