Nephi quotes a personal vision or auditory revelation. It is probably still (following Nephi’s recent recasting of Isaiah) that same vision that he reported in 1 Nephi 11–14. Here he reports that he heard the voice of both the Father and of Jesus Christ—one of the few places in the Book of Mormon that makes a clear distinction between Father and Son. Thus, he presents two strong witnesses to the necessity of repentance and baptism. As the evidence from the Qumran community suggests, baptism was a rite that completed repentance. The repentant candidate for baptism makes spiritual reconciliation with Yahweh, and seals his or her repentance through baptism, which also restores ritual purity.
