The devil need not resort alone to venomous and caustic causes. He also specializes in those subtle sophistries which will put to sleep an entire generation and anesthetize a people against an understanding of their sinful state. People become secure in their carnality not only when they choose to pursue the trends of vice and immorality but also when they lose those feelings of divine discontent which motivate to repentance and improvement.
