“He Will Justify in Committing a Little Sin”

Brant Gardner

Nephi further describes the effect of the combination of the narrow quotidian focus on life with a theological conception of an accomplished mission of God. This erroneous philosophy reasons that the personal effects of sin have been diminished because the atonement has been fulfilled. All sin is essentially temporary because, after the sinner has indulged in it, the atonement removed its effects. Thus, according to this philosophy, sin has no permanent effect and causes little personal harm. Rather than having a crippling spiritual effect, it is more like a damaged article of clothing that can be discarded at the day’s end.
