The abandonment of gospel principles has always exposed mankind to the passions and gross appetites of the flesh. Nephi describes in these verses what he saw in his vision. He says he saw they knew they were sinning but justified it on the theory that God is soft-hearted so he will only punish the sinner with a few stripes and then they would be saved in the kingdom of God right along with those who have not sinned.
