The meaning is, as stated in verse 6: Do not believe in miracles, for now there are no miracles; God has done his work. This is exactly what rationalists during the "age of enlightenment" in the 19th century maintained. They made human, scientific knowledge the highest standard of truth. Unable to explain the miraculous scientifically, they treated it as myth, or denied it. Rationalism became the nurse of infidelity.
