The sealed book was a “portion of the gold plates that Joseph Smith was not allowed to translate” and which contained a “marvelous revelation the Lord gave to the brother of Jared wherein he saw ‘all the inhabitants of the earth which had been, and also all that would be … even unto the ends of the earth’ (Ether 3:25)” (Largey, Book of Mormon Reference Companion, 707).
