What is a voice “that hath a familiar spirit”?

Thomas R. Valletta

The word “familiar can suggest … ‘known from constant association.’ … It is certainly true that the Book of Mormon will have a spirit about it that will be familiar to those who know the Bible. … Familiar also has another meaning. … The Hebrew behind the ‘familiar spirit’ in Isaiah 29:4 (King James Version) is ’ob. This Hebrew word denotes, approximately, ‘the spirit of a deceased person.’ Therefore, a familiar spirit can also mean ‘a message from those who have passed on before us’” (Hoskisson, “‘Familiar Spirit’”).
