Nephi prophesied of the coming of Christ to his descendants. He foresaw in vivid and heartrending detail the destructions and devastations inflicted on his own wicked descendants who would oppose the prophets and reject the Savior—all recorded in equally vivid detail in 3 Nephi 8–9 as they transpired. The language of verse 4 shows up in the writings of the later prophet Malachi (4:1) but is obviously based on a much older prophetic description of which Nephi is aware. It has multiple fulfillments, one of which occurred when the Savior appeared to the Nephites as prophesied in verse 1 (see, for example, 3 Nephi 9:3). Nephi also foresaw the merciful healing, peace, and prosperity with which his righteous descendants would be rewarded.
