Nephi was commanded by the Lord to keep his record. He knew he had been commanded to write and he knew what to write; he may not have always known why he should write. But he “did know that their records would be preserved and given to future generations to assist in the Restoration” (Robert J. Matthews, Selected Writings of Robert J. Matthews: Gospel Scholars Series [1999], 356).
