The Book of Mormon and the Latter-day revelations. One of the great objects of the Book of Mormon is to convince the Children of Israel that Jesus, whom their ancestors rejected, is the promised Messiah. It should not be difficult for well-informed, intelligent descendants of Abraham to accept Jesus as their Messiah, their deliverer; for, wherever his principles have been accepted and his divine authority acknowledged, liberty, religious and civil, has prevailed. In 1654 A. D. the first Jews in the United States, 23 in number, arrived in what was then New Netherlands. They came from Brazil, to escape persecution there, and found a warm welcome and perfect freedom here. And since then, wherever American democracy has prevailed over autocracy, the Jews have been on an equal level with other citizens. War on the American democracy is, therefore, in many places, also an attack on the Jews and the Messiah, the divine Author of human freedom.
