“Babylon Shall Be Destroyed”

Joseph F. McConkie, Robert L. Millet
As strange as it may have sounded to a person in 600 B.C., even the great Babylonian empire would come to an end, would be humbled to the dust by that God who holds the destiny of all nations in his hands (see 2 Nephi 24:4-22). By approximately 530 B.C. the Persian empire under Cyrus would defeat the Babylonians and become the world power and the means by which the Jews would be allowed to return to their homelands in Judea. Indeed, the ancient Babylon will be but the symbol of demise of all worldly powers when Christ comes to gather Israel a final time and reign as King of kings.
