Nephi gives a specific example of the fate of those who ignore the prophetic call to repentance. Isaiah may have specifically prophesied concerning the Assyrian destruction, but Nephi had witnessed a second foreign invasion (from Babylon) that mirrored the Assyrian conquest in destruction. That experience likely founded Nephi’s confidence that Isaiah’s prophecies could be applied to other times and circumstances. Hence Nephi uses the most recent prophecy and fulfillment of the destruction of Jerusalem by Babylon as a proof that the prophecies of the destruction of the Nephites will also come to pass.
