Nephi has already said that he has the spirit of prophecy and is therefore qualified to interpret Isaiah. Nevertheless, he also asserts that his Jewish acculturation and education help him appreciate and understand Isaiah’s prophecies. What are those things that are so important to understand of the manner of prophesying of the Jews? As we have seen in our discussion of Isaiah, much depends upon understanding the historical and cultural context behind the prophecy. It is not so much Isaiah’s words and presentation but his assumption of an extensive background in the history, literature, and culture of the times that provides the meaning of his prophecies. In the case of Nephi’s use of those prophecies, he is recontextualizing them so that they apply to the future of his own people. Hence, he must explain how these words fit into a new context that does not require the learning of the Jews, nor their history, nor their literature.
