It is a well-known fact that the trees of Lebanon were cut down by the kings of Assyria (cf. Habakkuk 2:17), and inscriptions found in the district of Lebanon seem to confirm the Babylonian guilt in this respect.

The various destructions described by Isaiah always involve destruction of the forests. Therefore, now that he described the land at peace, he pictured the forests themselves as feeling secure.
