In verse 19 Isaiah says that by the time the Babylonians were finished the glorious city of Babylon was a scene of total desolation, similar in many respects to Sodom and Gomorrah after God's consuming fire had wiped out the entire population. Verse 20 suggests that Babylon would never be rebuilt as it once was. The Persians built two new capitals, one at Susa and the other further south at Persepolis. As for the ruins of Babylon, Isaiah said wild beasts of the desert would roam through her ghostly ruins and doleful creatures such as owls, lizards and satyrs or wild goats would inhabit her ruined houses and the desolated palaces. At the end of this chapter Isaiah added a sentence which is not in the Bible. According to the brass plates, Isaiah quoted the Lord as saying: "I will destroy her speedily, yea, for I will be merciful unto my people [who are righteous] but the wicked shall perish."
