The land in which were situated the great cities of Babylon, Erech and Akkad (Genesis 10:10). It lay in a plain to which early migrants came to found the city and tower of Babel (Genesis 11:2) and was a place of exile for the Jews (Isaiah 11:11; Daniel 1:2).
