“And in That Day There Shall Be a Root of Jesse”

D. Kelly Ogden, Andrew C. Skinner

In the latter days the root of Jesse, who is Joseph Smith, will stand as an ensign to the people (see commentary at 2 Nephi 21:1, 10); to him (not “it,” as in the King James Version) will the Gentiles seek, and his rest will be glorious. Lucy Mack Smith, the Prophet’s mother, described what happened at the viewing of her martyred sons: “I sank back, crying to the Lord in the agony of my soul, ‘My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken this family!’ A voice replied, ‘I have taken them to myself, that they might have rest.’ … I seemed almost to hear them say, ‘Mother, weep not for us, we have overcome the world by love; … ours is an eternal triumph.’” 65
