The pact between Ahaz and Assyria required Judah to become a vassal state, paying annual tribute. Yahweh promises Judah that this burden or yoke will be removed. However, the reference to “anointing” may locate this ultimate liberation in the eschatological future. Because the Messiah is the “anointed one,” this reference may allude to his coming.
Translation: Blenkinsopp comments: “‘A yoke [is broken off] because of oil,’ may have resulted from reading a corrupt text as a (scarcely intelligible) gloss on the preceding ’ulo, perhaps with the anointing of the ideal ruler in mind.”
