“His Hand Is Stretched Out Still”

Brant Gardner

Repeating the names emphasizes them, while switching their order breaks the monotony of mere repetition. The names stand for the northern kingdom of Israel, then politically opposed to Judah. The repetition of the image of the Lord’s outstretched hand marks the end of the third stanza.

As noted earlier, the first four verses of the next chapter should be read in conjunction with this unit.

Likening: Verses 6–7 are read Messianically and provide sufficient reason for Nephi to include this section. The rest of the chapter deals with the destructive chastising of Israel. Nephi has seen a similar military defeat for his future people. He would see in Isaiah’s warning a direct warning for his own people.

Text: The chapter does not end here in the 1830 edition.
