“Great and Fair Cities Without Inhabitant”

Brant Gardner

This rich man’s dream of control over vast holdings becomes a curse. When men in their pride accumulate land and evict the previous owners, they will indeed be alone—not because of their accumulations, but rather because of desolation caused by Yahweh’s wrath. Lands and even cities will be without inhabitants.

The rich man’s desire will be fulfilled in a terrible way. The literary linkage between verses 8 and 9 reinforces the culpability of Judah’s men.
