Of Head, Secret Parts

K. Douglas Bassett

(Isa. 3:17)

The phrase, “to smite with a scab the crown of the head” refers to the hair of the head and means “to cause a disease or scab of the scalp,” hence “to make bald.” The removal of a woman’s hair usually is not considered an honor, but one of disgrace. “Make bare their secret parts” comes from the phrase … meaning “to spread out or to open up” and has reference to making the intimacy of the naked female exposed to the whole world. Though some people today may do that on the movie screen for money, to anyone of honor and dignity it would be considered a most singular, ultimate disgrace. To cause baldness and reveal intimate nakedness means “to inflict great shame and disrepute.”
