The cursing called down upon the daughters of Zion should not be seen as a condemnation of personal ornamentation, but rather as a condemnation of excessive ornamentation deriving from ostentation. These verses follow the condemnation of the elders for consuming the goods of Israel and the oppression of the common people. The condemnation of the women comes in that context. The excessive and ostentatious ornamentation is used as an example of the unnecessary use to which the substance of the people has been put.
