“They Who Lead Thee Cause Thee to Err”

Ed J. Pinegar, Richard J. Allen

Nephi is favored with a prophetic view of the destiny of the people of Lehi. The visions that Nephi beholds when caught away in the Spirit (see 1 Nephi 11–14) give him a comprehensive view of the unfolding history of the remnant of the house of Israel in the New World. Jacob, his brother, is given a similar inspired view of the future. What they behold is often marked with the painful consequences of pride and wickedness. As it turns out, the Lamanites, in general, pursue the paths of wickedness because of the misguided traditions of their fathers. Only occasionally do they penetrate the darkness of their upbringing to emerge into the light of gospel truth. Later, despite periods of great spiritual abundance and prosperity, the Nephite nation itself eventually becomes extinct through the effects of consuming pride and wickedness. We would therefore do well, in our day, to pay strict attention to the warning of Isaiah that “they who lead thee cause thee to err”—and take steps to ensure that our own personal leadership in family, Church, and community is on track and in alignment with the values and principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
