The Book of Mormon retains the phrase “for they shall perish” in place of “it shall be ill with him,” much of which was italicized by the King James translators. The sterner punishment is more consistent with other scriptures regarding the Second Coming and the destruction of the wicked. For example, in modern revelation the Lord said: “And every corruptible thing, both of man, or of the beasts of the field, or of the fowls of the heavens, or of the fish of the sea, that dwells upon all the face of the earth, shall be consumed” (D&C 101:24). Other bold words in the Book of Mormon text, in the above quote and in the following ones, are insignificant differences.
Verse twelve refers to women ruling over Judah. Note that nothing derogatory is said about leadership by women per se, but obviously they would not be ruling with the priesthood. During Judah’s dispersion among the Gentiles, there were undoubtedly many women who ruled over them, and in modern times Golda Meir has served as Israel’s prime minister.
