The face mirrors the soul. The face witnesses to the contents of the heart. The ancient concept of personality saw the physical as the reflection of the spiritual inner being. Thus, Jacob told Rachel and Leah: “I see your father’s countenance, that it is not toward me as before; but the God of my father hath been with me” (Gen. 31:5). Similarly, Alma2 queries: “Have ye spiritually been born of God? Have ye received his image in your countenances? Have ye experienced this mighty change in your hearts?” (Alma 5:14).
