“The Book of Mormon adds five phrases in these few verses, four of which stress the universality of the judgment. … The fifth addition in verse 16 is also found in the early Greek version of the Old Testament, the Septuagint. … Since the prophet Joseph Smith did not know Greek, and since there is no evidence that he had access to a copy of the Septuagint [the Greek translation of the Old Testament] when he completed his Book of Mormon translation in 1829, this addition supports the fact that Joseph Smith translated the Isaiah portion in the Book of Mormon from a more authentic ancient text” (Ludlow, Isaiah, 90–91).
