What can we learn from Jacob’s conclusion?

Thomas R. Valletta

Jacob began his two sermons speaking about “an infinite atonement” (2 Nephi 9:7). “Note that Jacob closes his sermon with a final testimony that it is through the Atonement of Christ alone that man can gain an entrance into the eternal kingdom of God, there to praise him for his grace divine. That is the sum and substance of the sermon. And it is stated in sentences which, through their beauty of literary style bear the marks of divine inspiration in every word” (Reynolds and Sjodahl, Commentary on the Book of Mormon, 320).
