“The Covenants of the Lord”

Daniel H. Ludlow

A covenant is sometimes defined as “a solemn contract between two parties who agree to bind themselves to certain requirements”; thus a covenant is sort of a two-way promise. The “covenants of the Lord” refer to certain conditions or requirements that the Lord has set down; if the person keeps these requirements, certain blessings must follow, but if he does not meet the specified conditions, the Lord is no longer bound by the covenant. The Lord has described his role in the covenant as follows: “I, the Lord, am bound when ye do what I say; but when we do not what I say, ye have no promise.” (D&C 82:10.)
