What happens to those who die without the truth?

Thomas R. Valletta

“Jacob points out that when men have knowledge of the gospel they are required of the Lord to use that knowledge and repent of their sins. Those who do not have knowledge for whatever reason (either because of infancy, lack of mental ability, or perhaps they were never taught) are automatically covered by the Atonement … .

“‘Those who have not the law given unto them’ include little children, and Jacob explains that such are rescued by the Atonement. King Benjamin and Mormon also taught the same doctrine regarding children (Mosiah 3:11–16; Moroni 8:5–20). This is a great contrast to the prominent doctrine of original sin held by many Christian denominations” (Matthews, “Atonement of Jesus Christ,” 183).
