Jacob introduces those to whom mercy has been extended. The righteous—those who will have righteously judged themselves—will inherit the kingdom of God. Clearly, they deserve that inheritance. Nevertheless, Jacob makes it clear that their presence is not simply due to Yahweh’s justice, but also to his mercy.
Translation: The phrase “endured the crosses of the world” appears anachronistic. (See commentary accompanying 2 Nephi 10:4–5 for crucifixion in the ancient world.) Although Nephi’s vision (and possibly Jacob’s) might have shown Christ’s death, it seems unlikely that the image would be well-known among the Nephites. This phrase may be best explained as Joseph Smith’s transference of meaning rather than his direct translation.
