Jacob begins by reminding his brethren of previous occasions when he had spoken to them. He also reminds them of this authority to speak having been called by God, and ordained by Nephi (v. 2). His authority corresponds with the Fifth Article of Faith: “a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof.” Jacob was speaking to his people, for “the welfare of [their] souls” (v. 3). He spoke for the same reason in his earlier speeches. He used his father’s words as well as written scriptures. The selection of Isaiah as his text was two fold: to exemplify truth and because of Nephi’s desire that he do so. The truthfulness of Isaiah’s words should lead them to learn and glorify the name of their God (v. 4). The Savior also equated Isaiah’s words with the definition of truth: “And all things that he spake have been and shall be, even according to the words which he spake” (3 Nephi 23:3).
