It became clear to Nephi that he and others in the family who “believed in the warnings and the revelations of God” must follow the Lord’s admonition and separate themselves from the disobedient family members by fleeing inland to a place they designated the land of Nephi. They became “the people of Nephi” and kept the law of Moses, the old preparatory law given to the children of Israel of whom they were a part, but now a branch broken off from the main tree.
