What does it mean to ask amiss?

Thomas R. Valletta

“This means ‘wrong’ or ‘improper.’ (2 Chron. 6:37.) To ask ‘not amiss’ is, therefore, to ask for that which is right and proper. ‘Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.’ (James 4:3.)” (Reynolds and Sjodahl, Commentary on the Book of Mormon, 1:268).
