As Lehi gave Lemuel’s posterity the same blessing as Laman’s, so he gives Sam’s posterity a blessing with Nephi. Their tribal fates would be associated, like those of Laman and Lemuel. It is interesting, however, that unlike the blessings on the posterity of Laman, Lemuel, and the sons of Ishmael, Lehi also pronounces a blessing on Sam himself. In the transfer of the “first blessing” (see commentary accompanying 1 Nephi 1:28), those men lost their personal blessing, even though Lehi makes certain that their posterity is blessed. Sam, however, does not remain without a personal blessing. He receives a blessing that is not the birthright yet which personally recognizes him in the blessing to his posterity.
