Lehi, knowing that the conclusion of his life was near, in the pattern of the ancient patriarchs (see Genesis 27:4, 10; Genesis 48:10-20; Genesis 49:1-28) called his family together so that he might give to each member thereof his parting blessing and admonition. Apparently the first of these patriarchal blessings was given to his youngest son, Joseph.
