As Lehi indicates, it is only through the atonement of Jesus Christ that men are made free. Because the atonement redeems men from the fall of Adam, they "become free forever, knowing good from evil; to act for themselves and not to be acted upon, save it be by the punishment of the law." (2 Nephi 2:26.) Although the Savior freed us from the effects of the fall and thus gave us the freedom to choose either good or evil, we remain free only as we keep the commandments and "choose liberty and eternal life"; if we choose "captivity and death," then we become "miserable like unto" the devil. (2 Nephi 2:27.)
