This brings us to the classical statement of Lehi that "Adam fell that man might be and men are, that they might have joy." Here Lehi is teaching us that the fall of Adam and Eve was to fulfill God's purposes. As Lehi explains it, if there had not been a fall it would have left Adam and Eve in a helpless condition, without any opportunity to progress. We also learn that if the Father had caused the Fall on his own initiative, mankind would have spent their lives blaming God for all of the hardships associated with the learning experiences that come with mortal life. By setting up Adam and Eve so they would be motivated to bring about their own fall, they gained all the advantages of the mortal experience without being able to blame their difficulties or hardships on their Heavenly Father.
