“Partake of the Forbidden Fruit”

Jana Reiss

Like the verse above, this one becomes more transparent if we understand the expanded teachings about Adam and Eve that are contained in the Pearl of Great Price. In a nutshell, Mormons believe that Eve made a courageous moral choice in eating the fruit. She recognized that she and Adam could only exist as stagnant children if they remained in the garden: they could never die, and they could never have children themselves. Therefore, they could not progress to eternal life with God. By eating the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, Eve brought mortality into the world, with all its accompanying pain, disease, and heartache. But in a sense, she also paved the way for eternal life—not merely the physical immortality that came automatically with living in the Garden of Eden, but a far greater spiritual reward that would enable all people to become like God, their creator, and dwell with him for eternity.
