Lehi explains that all mortals are “instructed sufficiently” through the Spirit of Christ (see also Moroni 7:16). The law is given to everyone, but by the law no person is justified because no one can live it perfectly. As Paul taught, “Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin” (Romans 3:20). The law of justice demands payment for all sin committed (see left side of accompanying chart). Because of our natural-man inclination to sin (Mosiah 3:19), we are cut off from the presence of our Heavenly Father, and we pile up a mountain of sins here in mortality, thus precluding our ever again living with the purest and holiest Beings in the universe. By temporal and spiritual law we would be consigned to misery forever. Therefore, our Savior, the Holy Messiah, came to offer Himself as payment for the demands of the law and to provide the way back (see right sight of accompanying chart; see also 2 Nephi 25:23, 26).
