Lehi is not saying that his unrighteousness has condemned him to hell; rather, he is affirming the atonement. Even a prophet is imperfect and, hence, unfit for exaltation without the redemption of the Atoning Messiah. This event lies in Lehi’s future, but his faith in it is firm. Lehi’s declaration of faith to his sons shows the depth of his understanding and commitment. He has seen Yahweh’s glory and is encircled eternally in the arms of his love. That image of personal interaction and understanding speaks volumes about the righteousness and quality of Lehi’s soul. While Nephi may not have chosen to give an extensive biography of his father on his small plates, it is certain from this statement that Lehi continued to be a strong patriarch.
