Thomas Valletta notes that the word confounded is usually defined today s "confused" and "bewildered." In the time that the Book of Mormon was translated into English, however, it also meant "mixed or blended in disorder," as well as "put to shame" (Noah Webster, An American Dictionary of the english Language [1828], s. v. "Confounded"). [Thomas R. Valletta ed., The Book of Mormon for Latter-day Saint Families, 1999, p. 66]
