Who are those in prison and how will they be set free?

Thomas R. Valletta

“The prisoners spoken of are those who are presently confined to a spirit prison or ‘state of misery.’ These are they who ‘chose evil works rather than good’ during their earthly sojourn. (Alma 40:13–14.) Following His death on Calvary, the disembodied Christ went to the spirit world where He organized His righteous followers into a missionary task force to take the gospel to those in the spirit prison. (D&C 138:18–21, 28.) As these confined spirits accept the gospel, and as saving ordinances are performed in their behalf in holy temples here on earth, the prisoners are set free. (D&C 128:22.)” (Brewster, Isaiah Plain and Simple, 195).
