“Kings and Princes Shall Worship Israel”

Monte S. Nyman

7 Thus saith the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel, his Holy One, to him whom man despiseth, to him whom the nations abhorreth, to servant of rulers: Kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship, because of the Lord that is faithful. [1 Nephi 21:7]7 Thus saith the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel, and his Holy One, to him whom man despiseth, to him whom the nation abhorreth, to a servant of rulers, Kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship, because of the Lord that is faithful, and the Holy One of Israel, and he shall choose thee. [Isaiah 49:7]

Isaiah further identifies and quotes the Lord to his covenant people in Israel who have been traditionally despised and abhorred by the Gentiles. Even the Gentile kings and princes are going to recognize the work of the servant Israel. The 1 Nephi text and the KJV are basically the same. The bold words in the KJV above are deleted in the First Nephi text, but only the last two bold phrases have any significance. However, the point of the two phrases was firmly established in the previous verses of the chapter. Someone apparently added these words to the original text since the words of Isaiah recorded on the plates of Nephi were written on the plates of brass before 600 B.C.
